Final Project: Math Homework Helper Resource List & Work Tracker

Yes, the project reviews really inspire me. I am thinking about creating a “Math Homework
Helper (Grade: 6-12) Resource List” and “Classwork Tracker.” As a teacher, I am there to help,
mentor, and assist my students’ learning during my work hours of the school day; however,
when I am not there during and after my work hours, students can use and access my “Math
Homework Helper Resources/Classwork Tracker” from their tool box to help them learn, do
their homework and track their progress.

As you are aware or know that many teenagers are (very) disorganized in keep track of their work. Sometimes, I feel that they are surprisingly good at using their selective listening skills, they tend to shut off or turn on what they want to hear or learn.

I believe that my students not only need help with their math homework, but also with keeping
track of their work. So, if I can provide them with learning tools and offer them various
resources to help students learn and practice their organization and time management skills, they
will get better.

As a reflective and caring teacher, I am a true believer that learning and grading is not black or
white or just a “Game Over” concept like when you play a computer game. Learning is a process
along a long continuum which one can learn and progress through time, with practice,
redos/revisions, the right nurturing, and a conducive environment. As Sir Robinson eloquently
stated in the Education’s Death Valley, “There are three principles crucial for the human mind to
flourish: human beings are different and diverse, curiosity, and creativity.” When we allow them
extra time, flexibility, and ignite their curiosity, they will show us their best creativity. Thus,
learning will occur instead of fidgeting of “low-grade level of clerical work” or boring routine
that they need to endure.

Gender Wars

When Warner Bros Pictures produced the Barbie Movie, I can only think of one thing such as
profit as the end game. The company does not care where these profits come from, ever thought
of by their young girls. I guess whatever the company can sell and gain profit from their
figurative doll and movie regardless of young girls as their customers. They continue to market
towards them.

Ideally, in Barbie’s doll world, Barbie is the ideal feminine figure who achieved so much in her world. Barbie has and owns everything in pink (pink dresses, shoes, pink clothes, pink cars, and pink house, etc.) Barbie defied the patriarchal norms in our human world where males are the breadwinners of our (real) society. In a play world, Barbie’s success might put a lot of pressure on girls in general if girls choose and fantasize Barbie as their role model. In our real world, we can see many successful female figures such as CEOs, vice presidents, lawyers, doctors, and engineers, etc. Despite Barbie’s success, Handler (1959), did not allow Barbie to get married. As Ruth Handler stated (1994), “My whole philosophy of Barbie was that through the doll, the little girl could be anything she wanted to be. Barbie always represented the fact that a woman has choices.” Girls can be in any profession if they set their mind to it and work hard towards it.

I believe that Christiansen would validate my views of these culture wars. That is, if we look at Disney and Warner Bros, they are the entertainment companies for profits regardless of what genders, nationalities, and religions they throw under the buses. Most of these movies and shows are biased toward minorities and most of the time misrepresent minorities’ success. Their end game is to make and market toward young audiences and minorities which they can easily manipulate and cater to. As far as the movies or shows are concerned, I did not grow up watching them much besides PBS station or Hallmark programs.

Digital Native

Boyd stated that when you were born or grew up in the digital age, from 1982 to present, you are considered to be a “Digital Native” compared to adults who were born before 1982, who are considered as “Digital Immigrants” who needed to learn the various technological tools and applications to navigate through a new and improved world. Prensky was cited more as the originator even though he coined the term “digital native” independently of either Rushkoff or Barlow. Prensky uplifted the term to celebrate young people’s knowledge and fluency with technology. Thus, he got more recognition than other authors. It is a way of promoting and celebrating young people’s technological savvy.

As far as the “Digital native” terminology is concerned, I totally agree with it in the sense that “native” is one who was born in it while “immigrant” refers to one's need to immigrate or put effort to make journey from one place to the next; it is the learning process from old things to new things like technology. This process of acquiring new skills and learning new things just like the new immigrants who immigrated to this country requires them to adapt and learn new things in their new country. Along the learning process, some vital information might not be acquired right away or get lost during transition and translation. It is going to take time to adapt, acquire, and acculturate to new things (costumes, cultures, and languages, etc.)
